 The email sanitizer is the part
of your A-Street service that prevents your computer from being infected by viruses and macros in hostile email attachments. Since we installed this system no customer has unknowingly been infected with any hostile email attachment via their A-Street email service. No other ISP offers such a
comprehensive filtering service.
The Improvements
We now scan every email attachment for over 100,000 known viruses and attempt to disinfect those that are infected. This by itself will not prevent 100% of hostile content (see earlier
article), so we also de-fang attachments that would execute if you clicked on them in your email program by mangling the filename suffix. If you want to execute such programs, just remove the DEFANGED-XX suffix of that file after saving it on your computer.
Attachments may be removed from a delivered email if the system determines that the attachment contains hostile content and it cannot be disinfected. If this occurs you will receive a notice in the email that will inform you that a file has been quarantined and how to retrieve it using your web browser. Do this only *if* you are willing to take the chance that the file may damage your computer. It is still infected! A-Street will not be held responsible for any damage or data loss that may occur. Quarantined files will be removed from our servers after 7 days, if you do not retrieve them.
To eliminate SPAM we also have the ability to pre-sort messages into separate email folders as our customers request. This process is similar to the physical process of sorting your regular postal mail into different piles when you get it from your mailbox. Important mail that is directly addressed to you by another individual will be placed in your INBOX, email from automated mailing lists where you addressed as the equivalent of "RESIDENT" is placed in a second box called NotToMe and junk in a third Spam folder. Spam
that is not viewed and moved within 7 days of delivery is deleted.
We do not arbitrarily delete email without allowing you to review it ...if you want. Most spam systems delete email you may want, because one person's SPAM is anothers business opportunity.
