Best Buy Geek Squad Insiders Tell Why Their Service Is So Poor Posted by oswald on Tuesday, April 03 2007 @ 10:44 PDT (7303 reads) Topic: A-Street
| The Consumerist has a story on how BestBuy took a great regional computer service company and made it mediocre. The "agents" receive little or no training and it's really a sales job, not a repair service. Agents are required to add as much extra junk as possible to your work order. Think used car sales: you NEED floor mats and undercoating. Yeah, these guys can fix your computer...

Another Total Takeover Microsoft Windows (Vista included) Exploit Posted by oswald on Friday, March 30 2007 @ 14:35 PDT (6837 reads) Topic: Microsoft
| Visiting a website with
Microsoft Windows Vista (or earlier versions of Windows) with Internet Explorer allows hijackers to take over your system completely. This is a
Zero Day Exploit and is actively being used on the Internet NOW and has existed in Windows for years.... Microsoft acknowledges they have known about it since December 2006, but have not released a fix.
CORRECTION: Microsoft knew about this in 2004! Way before Vista was released.

|
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 has
lengthened daylight saving time by four weeks in the US.
Instead of beginning the first Sunday of April and running through the last Sunday in October, daylight saving time will now stretch from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. Electronic devices that track time will need to be updated to handle the new start and end dates.

Daylight Savings Time Update for Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, XP and XPSP1 Posted by oswald on Tuesday, March 06 2007 @ 14:07 PST (7709 reads) Topic: Microsoft
| Microsoft is not providing support or updates for the changes in Daylight Savings Time (DST) this year on Sunday March 11th at 2am. So users of Windows 95, 98, 98se, ME, NT and 2000 need to use unofficial patches if they want the clocks on their computers showing the correct time during the 3 added weeks in March and one week in November.

| So they plan to crank up the Digital Restrictions Management in Vista to make it even more painful to use rather than get the hint that customers do not want a computer that they cannot control.

Forbes Magazine: Warns Readers to Stay Away From Microsoft Vista Posted by oswald on Saturday, February 10 2007 @ 15:17 PST (6852 reads) Topic: Microsoft
| Forbes magazine has warned readers to
avoid Microsoft Vista.
"Vista is a fading theme park with a few new rides, lots of patched-up old ones and bored kids in desperate need of adult supervision running things. If I can find plenty of problems in a matter of hours, why can't Microsoft ? Most likely answer: It did--and it doesn't care."

Wall Street Journal calls Microsoft Vista Unexciting more of the same Posted by oswald on Thursday, January 18 2007 @ 08:36 PST (6582 reads) Topic: Microsoft
| The
Wall Street Journal has reviewed Microsoft Vista and found it "unexciting." They also expect the security issues that haunt Windows XP to continue in Vista. Which is obvious given that you still need Antivirus software with Vista, something not needed in MacOS or Linux.

UPDATED: What you lose if you upgrade to or buy Microsoft Vista Posted by oswald on Saturday, December 16 2006 @ 17:41 PST (9537 reads) Topic: Microsoft
| Microsoft Vista provides little new utility, but lots and lots of new restrictions on how users can use their computers.
“Vista is an upsell masquerading as an upgrade. It is an overall regression when you look at the most important aspect of owning and using a computer: your control over what it does. [...]the new 'features' in Vista are a Trojan Horse to smuggle in even more restrictions."
If you want to purchase your own leg irons and pay to keep them firmly locked about your legs (you won't be running or even walking quickly anywhere) Vista is the path.

Microsoft Vista Product Activation Cracked Posted by oswald on Saturday, December 09 2006 @ 11:49 PST (7527 reads) Topic: Microsoft
| So the activation scheme of Microsoft's new "most secure operating system for media companies (to hell with customers) ever" has been cracked. So will the only people that will be hobbled by
Microsoft's control schemes will be the legitimate consumers who buy it? Hmmmm.
